Pioneer's New Plasma Panels Dazzle

True to the company name, Pioneer was one of the first companies to productize color plasma displays (PDPs), and has continues to produce some of the best-looking panels on the market. And unlike many other players in this market, Pioneer's panels have always been capable of displaysing 720p HDTV content pixel for pixel. The company's fourth generation panels have made a variety of improvements, and the company's newest panel's are actually EnergyStar-compliant. According to a company official, the peak power draw of the company's 42“ panel is around 250 watts. This is considerably less than typical plasma panels of that size whose peak power draw is usually between 350-400 watts.

Pioneer's PureVision panels also don't adjust white levels to regulate power consumption, a practice that some other panels use. We came across this issue testing Gateway's 42? plasma panel. The new PureVision panels also refresh at 72Hz, and are able to perform 3:3 pulldown with DVD content rather than the more typical 3:2 pulldown most panels do. All these panels are WXGA (1367x768), and can display 720p content pixel for pixel, and 1080i content via a scaler.
